With her daughter at her side, Eleise Daniels, a caregiver for The Perfect Home Care, was sworn in as a citizen of the United States.
“This is such a big, special moment for us,” Eleise said. “I’ve been thinking about this for years, and I couldn’t be happier.”
Eleise was so delighted with the day because her daughter, Shanique, not only accompanied her, but was also sworn in as a U.S. citizen. “So this is a special day for the whole family,” Eleise said.
Eleise, a native of Jamaica and a legal resident of the United States since she arrived here in 1993, and her daughter were among 150 other impending citizens from 40 countries who attended the ceremony.
They all stood, raising their right hands, as a U.S. District Court judge led them through a moving ceremony in a federal courthouse in lower Manhattan. After reciting the oath to become U.S. citizens, the group sang the National Anthem and recited the Pledge of Allegiance.
“Welcome citizens!” the judge then exclaimed.
Eleise’s next step: Registering to vote in the presidential election in November. And who will receive her vote? “I’m not telling,” Eleise said with a laugh. “As a U.S. citizen, I have a right to keep my vote secret.”
